Record breaking efficiency

Jelling Varmevaerk is a Danish district heating plant in the historical village of Jelling, which is the former home of the Viking Chief Harald Bluetooth. Apart from the 15,300 mcollector field. Jelling Varmevaerk produces its energy from a 1 MW wood chip boiler, a 1.5 MW absorption heat pump.

3 gas boilers of 15 MW and a gas engine with a capacity of 8 MW heat and 6 MW electricity. 

The solar system was commissioned during the summer of 2016 and during its first week of operation, the collector field set a new Danish record by producing 4.97 kWh/m2 in a single day. 

Because of the historical background of the village, and being a UNESCO World Culture Heritage site, the visual outlook of the collector field is important Since Savosolar’s collectors are equipped with integrated connection hoses, the collector field looks more uniform and is less noticeable compared to installations with conventional connections.
The collector field in Jelling has double stanchions which allows for two collector rows to connect to one and the same pipe and thereby save costs and thermal losses. The annual solar thermal production is estimated to be 8.500 MWh, which covers 20-25% of the town’s energy need for heating.

Our measurement programme confirms that Savosolar’s collectors offer 10% higher efficiency compared to collectors with traditional absorber technologies

The highest possible efficiency - confirmed

In 2015, Savosolar delivered a 9,700 m2 solar thermal field to Løgumkloster Fjemvarme. A second order of 5,600 m2 was delivered and commissioned in the beginning of 2016. The complete field consists of 1030 collectors and covers about 20% of the annual thermal energy need of the district heating network.
The collectors are divided to four fields, one of which has absorbers with the traditional copper tube and aluminium fin design. The purpose of this was to compare this design with Savosolar’s absorber design with Direct Flow absorbers. The measuring programme, which has received state subsidies, confirms that Savosolar’s collectors with Direct Flow absorbers have 10% higher efficiency compared to traditional absorber designs. 

The largest part of the heat demand is covered by the pellet boiler, but Logumkloster Fjernvarme has plans to change this in the future by extending the solar field and building a large seasonal water storage. After the expansion, Logumkloster Fjernvarme expects to have a total installed collector area of over 50,000 m2  which would cover more than 50% of the plant’s annual production.

Maximum energy production from the area available

FORS A/S is an energy company owned by three Danish municipalities. Their district heating plant in Jyderup has about 900 customers and they decided to invest in solar thermal, since it offered them a more stable and cost efficient way to produce heat for their customers as well as reducing their C02 emissions with 16%.
In Jyderup, the collector field is a so-called hybrid field, with both single and double glazed collectors. The single glared
collectors are in the cold end of the collector rows and increase the low temperature as rapidly as possible, while the double glared collectors are located in the warm side of the collector rows where it is more important to reduce the heat losses. The collector field also has double stanchions which allows for two collector rows to connect to one and the same pipe and thereby save costs and thermal losses.
Thanks to the efficiency of Savosolar’s collectors, and the double stanchion system which reduces both the amount of piping as well as the land required, FORS A/S is able to maximise the energy production from the area which was available.
